Home » The best time to take your child to the dentist is…

There is still a lot of confusion as to when you should bring your child into the dentist

When it comes to your child’s oral health it is important to look after their gums from day one.  Even before the first teeth erupt, after they’ve had food or milk, wipe their gums with a damp cloth. This way you get your child used to you intervening in their mouth.

Even though milk teeth fall out, if they are lost prematurely, this can affect the development and eruption of your child’s adult teeth.

Remember: your child’s milk teeth are important. Yes, they will eventually fall out, but they serve a purpose.  Actually they serve at least three purposes:

  1. Help jaw development and facial growth
  2. Speech
  3. Pave the way for adult teeth

Milk teeth that are poorly looked after can sometimes result in adult teeth coming through crooked, misaligned or even crowded. When we say poorly looked after, we mean that you need to help your child maintain optimal oral health in order to prevent cavities.

Tooth decay and disease in milk teeth can transfer to adult teeth as they erupt. If the decay is bad and it spreads to the root it can actually damage the development of the adult tooth lying underneath it.

New research by Colgate

Did you know that tooth decay affects nine out of every ten Australians?

And that tooth decay is considered one of Australia’s most chronic diseases for children?! It’s five times more prevalent in children than asthma.

According to the Australian Dental Association another 11 million teeth develop decay each year. The new research from Colgate says that 47% of adults have children who have experienced symptoms of tooth decay in the last 12 months, including toothache, tooth sensitivity , and infection.

Both the Australian Dental Association and the scientists working at Colgate have stressed the importance of looking after your child’s oral health. Children’s teeth are at risk of decay once their baby teeth begin to erupt.

So, what is the best time to take your child to see the dentist?

At Marriott & Hand in Airport West, Victoria, we would recommend that you bring your child in to see us when their first tooth erupts. This way we can look at the development of your child’s jaw and suggest further ways you can ensure your child’s developing oral health.

When your child’s first tooth erupts, use a tiny smear of toothpaste to keep it clean; as more teeth come through use a pea sized amount of toothpaste to keep their milk teeth healthy and clean. You will need to help your child brush their teeth until they become dexterous enough to get right to their back teeth. The skill and motivation to do this effectively doesn’t begin until age 11 or 12, so you need to be patient!
