Gum depigmentation treatment options

If your gums are healthy but have always been brown or black, it’s most probably due to a high concentration of melanin. You’re more likely to have dark gums if you have dark skin. Melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour, is also found in gum tissue.

A high level of melanin in the gums (gingival hyperpigmentation) doesn’t mean you have a medical problem, but many people with dark gums choose gum depigmentation treatment to get pink gums to enhance their smile.

Depigmentation of gums – also referred to as gum bleaching – can be achieved through different types of treatments, with scalpel, tissue freezing techniques, or laser.

What Are The Benefits Of Laser Gum Depigmentation?

You don’t have to be insecure about your smile anymore. Laser gum depigmentation is a modern solution for lightening dark coloured gums. This straightforward procedure quickly enhances the appearance of your gums, offering many benefits. Explore the advantages of this gum lightening technique with us.

  • Immediate Results: Laser gum depigmentation provides significantly lighter and more uniform gum colour in just one appointment. The immediate transformation facilitates a swift journey to achieving your desired vibrant, appealing smile.
  • Non-Invasive Technique: One of the biggest advantages of the procedure is that it doesn’t require a scalpel or stitches. This non-invasive approach promotes a smoother, less daunting experience, ensuring patients feel more comfortable and at ease.
  • Minimal Discomfort: Patients commonly report experiencing little or no pain during or after the laser procedure. The advanced technology used in the laser process aims to maximise patient comfort, making the gum lightening journey as pleasant as possible.
  • Quick Healing: The healing time associated with laser gum depigmentation is relatively short. Patients can swiftly return to their daily routines, making the procedure convenient and well-suited to modern, busy lifestyles.
  • Safety: Safety is a paramount consideration in the procedure. The laser technique is meticulously designed to be safe for soft tissues, ensuring that the integrity and health of your gums are upheld throughout the process.

Minimal Downtime: Many patients find that they can return to work on the same day as their procedure. This minimal downtime further accentuates the convenience of choosing laser depigmentation for enhancing the aesthetics of dark coloured gums.

Laser Gum Depigmentation
Laser Gum Depigmentation

Laser gum depigmentation

Gum bleaching with cosmetic laser dentistry vaporises a thin layer of gum tissue and destroys cells that produce melanin. The new tissue that grows during healing tends to be pink rather than black or brown. The procedure takes 20 to 45 minutes, and you can expect to be able to eat and speak normally straight after treatment. Full healing usually takes about two weeks. Laser gum depigmentation can last 20 years.

Conventional surgical gum depigmentation

Darkened gum tissue can be removed with a scalpel. Initial results tend to look good but may not last. Cells that produce melanin can sometimes get back into your gums, causing more dark pigmentation.

Gingival graft gum depigmentation

Gingival grafting to treat dark gums involves taking tissue with no pigmentation from the roof of the mouth and transferring it to the gums. This doesn’t remove the dark tissue but conceals it.

Cryosurgery gum depigmentation

Cryosurgery entails rapid freezing of gum tissue with tetrafluoroethane (TFE) gas to facilitate pigment removal. It’s been shown to produce results lasting for several years.

How long does it take to do laser gum bleaching?

Laser gum bleaching, or depigmentation, typically takes about 20 to 45 minutes per session. However, the duration can change based on each person’s situation and needs, particularly when treating dark coloured gums.

Factors such as the extent of discolouration, the size of the area being treated, and the patient’s overall gum health can influence the length of the gum depigmentation treatment. Some cases may require a more meticulous approach, extending the process, while simpler cases with minimal discolouration may be completed more swiftly.

Ultimately, a personalised consultation with our dentists will provide a more precise time frame based on your unique oral health status and goals.

What are the side effects of laser gum bleaching?

Laser gum bleaching, like any medical procedure, can have its own side effects. It is essential to be well-informed and prepared before undergoing the procedure. Here are some potential side effects of gum bleaching you need to take note of:

  • Sensitivity: Post-procedure, patients might experience sensitivity in the treated areas. It is a common reaction but generally subsides after a short period.
  • Swelling: Some degree of swelling might occur after the gum bleaching process. It’s usually temporary and part of the healing process.
  • Discomfort: A little discomfort or minor pain may be experienced immediately following the procedure, typically easing within a few days.
  • Gum Irritation: The gums may feel irritated or appear slightly reddened due to the laser’s activity, but this usually resolves quickly.
  • Recurrence of Pigmentation: Over time, the dark coloured gums may return due to genetics or smoking, necessitating further treatment.

You can reduce the risk of experiencing these potential side effects by entrusting your gums only to seasoned professionals.

At Aesthetic Laser Dentistry, you’re in capable hands. Our team is highly skilled and experienced in gum depigmentation treatments. We use the latest technologies and methods to provide effective, considerate, and tailored care to meet your specific needs and comfort.

Is gum depigmentation right for me?

If your gums have always had a darkened appearance, gum depigmentation is an effective cosmetic option provided your gums are healthy.

Gum bleaching is not a suitable treatment when a medical condition such as periodontitis (gum disease) has altered the colour of your gums. If you suspect you may have gum disease, see your dentist as soon as possible. As with gum depigmentation, you can also get laser treatment for periodontal disease.

Patient Stories

We love our patients, and we are happy to hear that they love us just as much!

Katelyn G

Thank you so much for having me in today Dr James! The team was amazing, they made feel sooo comfortable and my teeth are normal super sensitive so honestly a 10/10 experience. Be sure to check them out!!

Matthew S

I have never been a huge fan of going to the dentist but James made me feel incredibly comfortable throughout the whole procedure. It was relaxed and I never felt rushed. I am glad I have found a dentist I can connect with and I'll definitely be coming back for my check-ups.

Chantelle I

So thrilled with my experience with Dr James. He is a perfectionist and made sure I was completely happy with my new veneers. I broke my 2 front teeth when I was 8yrs and no one has ever been able to make them natural until now. They are just perfect and I have so much more confidence. The staff are all so lovely and caring, I honestly couldn’t recommend these guys enough!

Anthony K

Had an amazing experience at this dentistry. The staff were very friendly and Dr James was polite, detailed with explaining what was happening and made me feel very comfortable, regardless of my fear of visiting the dentist. I will definitely be using this place as my local dentist from now on.

Tim W

I have been to quite a few dental clinics in my lifetime and can admit to being fussy at times, however at last I can finally say ive found a clinic that I would be more than happy to go back too. My experience with Dr James B was phenomenal, I was treated with care, respect and professionalism. Ive been to plenty of dentists before and its simply been a chore for both me and them (I wont name names), giving no real reason to go back to the same dentist. Dr James has been the first dentist to show an interest in me as a patient and as a person, taking me through every step of the plan and procedure I had to undergo.

My son is a little anxious boy and was really scared to go to the dentist. Dr T was amazing with him and took special care to keep him comfortable. I would highly recommend Dr T to anyone who is nervous about seeing a dentist. The best experience.

Aneta R

What an experience. Met Dr Philip Hand to see my child, what an amazing person, been through so many doctors that would just be like you had a bad luck, for the condition of your child, nobody cares. Without even explaining of my daughter condition, he offered his help and handful of best contacts in Melbourne to help me and my girl. He is not only the best dentist he has the hands to help others. Thank you God for meeting a Doctor like Philip Hand, my self Aneta and Aurora will be forever grateful

Amazing cosmetic dental practice, couldn't ask for more! Dream smile and lips achieved

Anthony J

The team at Marriot and Hand were simply amazing. Dr Hand was very knowledgeable and explained everything about the treatments and why it was necessary. Karen was warm and open to all sorts of questions. I never felt rushed. As someone that has not been to a dentist for many years, it was time to face the music - I found them extraordinary professional and caring. Their service was so good I felt like I was catching up for a coffee with a friend rather than a visit to a dentist office. I'll look forward to my next appointment

Nushan Z

Fantastic Staff! Experienced Hygienist and Dentist. Great location with private carparking.

Jass F

After my MCHN suspected the cause of my son's breastfeeding issues was a tongue and upper lip tie, I went to see Dr. Philip Hand. He was one of the more reasonably priced dentists for this procedure. He was very friendly and put me at ease right away. He took the time to examine my son thoroughly and had a great manner with him. He obviously does his job properly and is not just out to get money, as he told me that neither tie was significant enough to warrant cutting. He noticed tightness around his facial muscles, though, and referred me to an oesteopath who has managed to solve the issue. This dentist knows his stuff, is friendly, and if it hadn't been for him, my son would not be feeding properly. Highly recommend him.

    How To Connect With Us

Numerous factors contribute to dark coloured gums, requiring gum depigmentation treatment for restoration. Here are the most common reasons:

    • Genetics: Natural gum colour is often determined by genetic factors.
    • Smoking: Leads to melanin buildup, resulting in darker gums.
    • Medications and Medical Conditions: Certain medications and health issues can affect gum colour.
    • Poor Oral Hygiene: Lack of proper oral care can cause gum discolouration over time.
    • Ageing: Gums can naturally darken with age.

At Aesthetic Laser Dentistry, we offer safe and effective gum lightening procedures to mitigate these effects, promoting a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

In each stage at Aesthetic Laser Dentistry, you’re supported by professionals committed to delivering exceptional care and results that meet your aspirations. Here’s a walkthrough of your gum depigmentation procedure:

    • Pre-Procedure Consultation: Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation. Here, we discuss questions such as “How can I turn my gums back pink?” to evaluate your gums’ condition and tailor the treatment precisely to your needs.
    • During the Treatment: In the actual gum depigmentation procedure, cutting-edge lasers target and remove the darkened layers of your gums, unveiling the naturally pink tissue underneath. The precise application ensures that the surrounding areas remain unaffected, promoting an efficient healing process.
    • Visualising the Transformation: Post-treatment, you’ll immediately notice a difference in the appearance of your gums. Comparing the “gum bleaching before and after” images will highlight the significant enhancement, bringing you closer to the desired pink appearance.
    • Aftercare: Following the procedure, we provide explicit aftercare instructions to facilitate a smooth recovery and optimise the results. Our dedicated team remains available to address any queries or concerns, ensuring your healing process is as comfortable and straightforward as possible.

At Aesthetic Laser Dentistry, the recovery period after gum depigmentation varies, as every case is unique. However, recovery generally happens quickly, with patients often resuming normal activities shortly after the procedure. Rest assured, our dental team will support you for a smooth and efficient healing process.

It typically requires 1-2 visits to address dark gums through depigmentation. However, the exact number can vary based on individual needs, the extent of discolouration, and specific treatment goals.

The cost of gum bleaching can vary due to several influential factors. The extent of the discolouration, the specific areas requiring black gums treatment, and each case’s individual complexities significantly impact the overall cost. The technology used and the tailored treatment plan, including the number of necessary sessions, also play crucial roles in the final “black gums treatment cost.”

At Aesthetic Laser Dentistry, we customise each treatment plan to meet your specialised needs. Book a consultation with us, allowing our dentists to provide a detailed and specific quote on the black gums treatment cost.

Laser gum depigmentation is generally well-tolerated, with most patients experiencing minimal discomfort. Local anaesthesia is used to numb the gums, ensuring the procedure is as painless as possible.

Some might feel slight discomfort, but rest assured, at Aesthetic Laser Dentistry, we prioritise your comfort. Feel free to communicate any pain during the procedure, and our attentive team will promptly address your concerns, ensuring the experience is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

The most popular alternatives to a gum depigmentation treatment are:

    • Whitening Solution with Microdermabrasion: This method uses a whitening gel and a special tool to lighten gums by removing melanin-containing cells. It’s a quick procedure, usually done in less than an hour.
    • Crown Lengthening: A surgical method that lowers the gums to show more teeth, suitable for healthy mouths. It is an alternative way to improve the gums’ appearance without laser whitening.

Before trying these procedures, consult Aesthetic Laser Dentistry to remain guided and safe. We’re here to protect your smile and overall wellbeing.

Besides gum depigmentation, we also cater to other dental needs. Take better care of your teeth, gums, and entire oral cavity through these services:
