What is TMD?
TMD causes jaw and other facial pain and can lead to eating difficulties. It affects an estimated 20 to 30 percent of the adult population to some degree. The condition is most prevalent among people aged 20 to 40 and affects more women than men, although teens have been known to develop the problem.
But what exactly is TMD? TMD stands for temporomandibular disorder. It’s also known as TMJ syndrome or temporomandibular joint disorder.
The temporomandibular joint connects your lower jaw bone (mandible) to the temporal bone of the skull in front of the ear. It’s one of the most-used joints in your body because it has a lot of work to do in ensuring optimal jaw function.
TMD happens when the temporomandibular joint stops working properly – a problem that can arise if your teeth are misaligned, for example.
Causes of TMD
The exact cause of TMD is often difficult to pinpoint because temporomandibular joints are complex structures containing bones, nerves, tendons and muscles. TMD may be due to a combination of factors, including:
- Bruxism (habitual teeth clenching or grinding)
- Physical injury
- Teeth misalignment
- Connective tissue disease
- Emotional stress
- Gum chewing
Symptoms of TMD
TMD can result in pain in the following areas:
- One or both sides of the jaw
Other symptoms of TMD include:
- Tinnitus – a ringing sound in the ears
- Popping sounds in your ears
- Facial swelling
- Blurred vision
- Locking of the jaw joint
- Clicking sounds or a grating sensation
Treatment options for TMD
In most cases, TMD can be treated with non-invasive procedures. Surgery is usually a last resort. Various treatments can alleviate the symptoms of TMD significantly. Your dentist may recommend one or more of the following:
- An oral appliance like a night splint to prevent your upper and lower teeth grinding together.
- Orthodontic treatment to move teeth back into proper position.
- Placing crowns or veneers on your teeth.
- Muscle relaxing injections.
- Myofunctional therapy to address problems with facial muscles.
- Medications such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs.

After my MCHN suspected the cause of my son's breastfeeding issues was a tongue and upper lip tie, I went to see Dr. Philip Hand. He was one of the more reasonably priced dentists for this procedure. He was very friendly and put me at ease right away. He took the time to examine my son thoroughly and had a great manner with him. He obviously does his job properly and is not just out to get money, as he told me that neither tie was significant enough to warrant cutting. He noticed tightness around his facial muscles, though, and referred me to an oesteopath who has managed to solve the issue. This dentist knows his stuff, is friendly, and if it hadn't been for him, my son would not be feeding properly. Highly recommend him.
